welcome to the new blog!

Hi everyone!

So I hear that a lot of friends and family are interested in my dental adventures. Rather than try and send out a million emails, I figured it may be easier to post updates here. I will still try and send individual replies, but I can give you more details (and pictures!) here.

My new apartment is pretty nice. I am going to try and attach a "video tour" I made on my camera. My favorite part is probably the patio, although right now it is too hot to sit out there. I overlook the parking lot and the freeway, but just beyond that is a park with a large mountain. It rained for the first time the other night, and the lightning over the mountains was AMAZING. The weird part wast that it was so hot and dry, that the rain evaporated before it hit the ground. The school is really pretty too, very clean and new. There are a lot of different wild animals on campus that I am not used to seeing...quails, lizards, roadrunners, and javalinas. Javalinas are wild pigs. Apparently the javalinas are quite mean, but I haven't seen them yet.

I just finished my first week of class, and I really liked it. This quarter I am taking the basic science class (systems based...we cover all the sciences), preventive dental medicine, ethics, and oral health science. Typically we are in the sim clinic (oral health science lab) on Mondays and in the other classes (mostly basic science) the other days of the week. We actually spent most of the day in lab today to make up for the fact that we have no class on Monday due to Labor Day. Our project was to make half of a tooth out of wax. The picture below is of my project; the blue, red, and green wax is the part that I built up. Yes, it took me several hours to get to this point, and yes, it is still unfinished! (Don't worry, it is actually a fake tooth that fits in my plastic tooth model.) I have my own little space in the sim clinic, my own set of instruments, and a "Dexter" under the desk. "Dexter" is the fake mannequin that we practice on. The technology is amazing. I will try and take some pictures and post them later.

Well that is the update for the week I suppose. I am going to add a few more pictures so you can get a feel of my new life in AZ. Stay tuned for more posts!
Here is a picture of the first day of class with some classmates, Mindi and Gary.

AZCDM2013...Here is a class picture that was taken today. We actually do wear scrubs most of the time. If we choose not to wear them, we have to dress "professionally".Here we are walking to class. A slight miscommunication in where we were supposed to be led to an impromptu smurf parade. I am the one holding the black laptop case in my arm like a schoolbook.
