Arizona drivers are, in a word, TERRIBLE. Considering the geriatric population in the area (nearby Sun City, AZ has a median age of 75, and 80% of the residents are 65 or older), this might not come as a surprise (so punny...nearby Surprise, AZ has a median age of 46). However, I can not go for a drive in my car without coming across another vehicle doing something completely bone-headed. For example (oh there are so many), yesterday I was driving with my roommate to the mall just a few miles up the road. During this 10 minute trip, one van lane-changed into my lane (sans signal) while I was still in it (thank goodness for horns), another car pulled out from a parking lot onto the main road and cut me off (again, thank goodness for horns), AND yet another minivan stopped and blocked three lanes of traffic (including mine) while waiting for the other side of the road to clear so that they could complete their left turn. Seriously? All this happened in a 3 mile trip?!? Arizona drivers seem to have no clue that they are not the only car on the road, because they certainly drive completely unaware of their surroundings. It has gotten to the point that we can no longer get angry at these Arizona drivers. (Shouting expletives doesn't work...I've tried.) My roommate and I now just laugh. The drivers always come up with news ways of making our jaws drop in awe of their stupidity. If people drove like this in Chicago, they'd so get run over.
So last night, as I was studying with the window open, I heard this loud bang followed by a car alarm going off. Because my roommate and I needed any excuse to take a study break, we went to the window to see what had happened. Turns out, an Arizona driver had struck again! One of the security guards had hit not one, but TWO parked cars with the golf cart he was driving.
(The security guards drive around the apartment complex in golf carts to ensure our security. Now I am fearful for the "security" of my car.) He must have either been drinking or texting or something while driving, because these cars were parked in their assigned spaces, underneath the carport. Apparently, the sidewalk was just not good enough to drive on. I did manage to sneak out onto my balcony and get a picture of all the "action" that was occurring once the owners of the parked cars found out what had happened. (My favorite part is how the golf cart has two wheels on the sidewalk and two on the parking lot/car's bumpers.) The damage to the fronts of the two cars was pretty significant once we saw it in daylight this morning. I'd be so HOT if that was my car. Luckily though, my assigned parking space is near the dead end of the same sidewalk, so I hope my car is safe; although, in this state, you never know!
