gleefully finishing the school year

Just a heads up...this will most likely be a long, media-filled post. (And it may be the last one in awhile, since I will be going home tomorrow morning. And you all know that when I am at home, I am too busy catching up with all of you to actually write about it. Just sayin'!)

So most of you know by now that I am a fan of the TV show, Glee. Back in March, they announced that the cast would be going on a 4 city tour. Luckily, one of those 4 cities happened to be Phoenix. Naturally, I wanted tickets and of course, tickets sold out instantly. However, my friend Mindi was able to get her hands on some tickets for myself, her, her husband, and my other friend Vicki. The show was on Sunday at the Dodge theatre in downtown Phoenix and it was AWESOME! Here is the play by play for those of you who are interested (ahem...Laura...Vicki...Mindi).

The opening act was a dance troupe known as the League of Extraordinary Dancers. They were pretty impressive, especially the guy that did the robot. Here is a link to a video of a performance that they did on "So You Think You Can Dance" TV Show. They did the same exact number to open for the Glee Live Tour.

Then it was time for Glee. All of the actors that play glee clubbers on the show were there and sang songs from the show. What really impressed me was the fact that these people could actually sing! I figured because it is a TV show, they did casting mostly based on acting talent and did a lot of editing to the singing portions of the show. However, this was a true live performance, and I was impressed at the singing abilities of some of the cast members. What you see on TV (or hear on the albums) is truly how well they can sing in real life. Here is the opening number, Journey's "Don't Stop Believing".

The show was mostly a concert, and the cast did performances of songs that they had performed on the show, often modeling the live performance after what they had done on TV. For example, in the show, the glee club sang "Jump" by Van Halen as part of a mattress commercial. In the show, they all dressed in pajamas and jumped on giant mattress trampolines as they sang.

One of my favorite characters is Kurt Hummel, and man can that boy sing! He did a duet with Rachel Berry of "Defying Gravity" from Wicked and it was amazing. I can't even hit notes that high! (But then again, I can't sing...)

Here are some still photos that turned out decently, despite not being able to use flash. They are from the boy's mash-up of "Hair/Confessions", the girl's mash-up of "Halo/Walking on Sunshine", and "Bust Your Windows".
They also did some songs that are from coming episodes, so it was really neat to see them before they air. The Glee version of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" was hysterical, especially with all the costumes that were influenced by the crazy things she has worn. I still can't get over how Kurt danced around in his Gaga shoes. Also, I saw the preview for this episode on TV, and it seems like they are wearing the same costumes in the show as they did on TV.

Here are two more videos from some of my favorite songs they did on the show: Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" and Madonna's "Like a Prayer".

Finally, they closed with "Somebody to Love" by Queen.

All in all, it was an amazing show. Mindi, Vicki, and I had so much fun talking about our favorite parts over lunch following the show and writing Glee quotes over each other's facebook walls. It's nice to share a crazy obsession with friends.

Then there was finals week, and it sucked. Nothing out of the ordinary really.

Today, I officially finished my first year of dental school! I don't think it has quite sunken in yet that I am a D2 now. The year went by so quickly. Yet, when you look back, we really accomplished a lot. One of my classmates actually counted, and we took 46 exams, 31 quizzes, 14 presentations, and 8 practicals in only 33 academic weeks. That is a LOT. A group of girlfriends and I celebrated by going shopping this afternoon. It was really enjoyable because all the stress was gone and we were just able to enjoy each other's company. We followed up shopping with a lunch at California Pizza Kitchen. Since then I have been cleaning my apartment and packing since my flight leaves in just over 8 hours. Guess that means I should head to bed.
