Coming up on April 2, we have Give Kids a Smile Day. We are opening the clinic on that Saturday to provide free healthcare to local children. It has been a lot of preparation so far, so I am excited to see it all come together.
Then, on April 9, there is the March of Dimes "March for Babies" in Phoenix. Our school is sponsoring a team and I signed up as a walker. If you would, please check out my personal sponsorship page and make a donation. The money goes towards research to prevent birth defects and premature birth. This topic is hitting a little close to home lately. I found out that some of my closest friends were born prematurely, and I can't imagine what my life would be like today if they did not overcome this obstacle. Also, a girl in my class was due to have twin boys in August, but went into premature labor this week and lost both of the babies. It was really sad to hear that bit of news and I felt a little bit helpless. This is going to be a good way to feel like I am being active and doing something about it. I want to walk in her honor and for those friends of mine that were lucky to overcome being premature. Please help out and donate what you can.
Finally, on May 7, I am going to participate in Girls on the Run. It is a program that works with young girls to encourage healthy lifestyles and good choices. The final event for the girls is running a 5K. I am signing up to be a "running buddy", which means that I will be paired with a girl and run with her to encourage her to finish the 5K. I am both excited and nervous about this, as I am not much of a runner and will probably need a bit of encouragement myself. I just hope I can keep up! I guess it will be time to step up my treadmill workouts!
And that is how I plan to do something about it.
