brief weekend update

Last night, a group of students in my suite decided it would be good times to head to Scottsdale for an evening of drinking and dancing.  Any night in Scottsdale involves some time spent getting gussied up, so about 8:30PM, I hopped in the shower.

I was in the shower for a few minutes when I reached for the shampoo bottle.  A huge cockroach jumped out from behind the bottle and was swept towards me in the current of water draining near my feet.  I let out a huge girly scream and leapt out of the shower.  I grabbed a towel and ran into the kitchen to try and find something to trap it with.  I just needed to move the sucker the 2 feet from the shower to the toilet where I could flush it into oblivion.  I didn't think about how fast they move or how close I would have to get to actually catch the thing.  I made several valiant attempts, to no avail and involving lots of squealing.  By this time, my roommate had heard all the ruckus and poked her head out of her room to ensure I was okay.  There I was, standing in the hallway dripping wet in a towel shrieking about a cockroach.  It was not one of my proudest moments.  Luckily, she is just as scared of bugs as I am, so she brought out a huge can of Raid that she let me use.  The Raid killed the sucker in like 2 seconds flat and I was then able to move him to the toilet for a flushing.  It was so gross, and I have been unable to take a shower since without getting a major case of the heebie-jeebies.  From what I hear from my local friends, they come up from the sewer through the drain in the tub.  That drain will remain closed from now on, except when I am showering.  The creepy crawlies need to stay out!

In other news, I am on a bit of a crafty kick again.  Tonight's project involved making painted jar luminaries for Halloween.  I took cues from this craft blog and Martha Stewart to create my own unique set of glowing pumpkin jars.  They aren't finished, so no photos to share just yet.  But they are looking super cute so far!  Also, I tried this new recipe for rigatoni with creamy mushroom sauce and it was delicious!  Obviously, I made some changes so that it was a little healthier and used ingredients I already had (cream cheese instead of marscapone, onion instead of shallot, chicken broth instead of vegetable stock, less exotic mushrooms, etc.).  It was super easy and very tasty.  Try it sometime!
