Today was a good day for all things related to NU football.
First, this article was published on Yahoo Sports about Jason Wright, a NU alum that most recently played for the Arizona Cardinals. I met Jason and his wife Tiffany while we were still in college. They are both wonderful people. My only regret is that I didn't get to visit with her more often while we were both living in Arizona. Alas, we lived too far apart on opposite sides of the valley to get together regularly. I hope they are enjoying a new life in Chicago!
Also, Pat Fitzgerald is pretty much the most stand-up guy ever. I have an immense amount of respect for him...probably because he makes advertisements like this. It is such a great time to be a member of NUMB (Northwestern University Marching Band), now that it has been integrated into (and financially supported) by the athletic department. The band now has much more respect and far cooler opportunities to support the team than they ever have had before.
When I was in college, the only people that knew of the unity between the team and the band were the team and the band. Randy Walker and the rest of the football team stopped by every Thursday night rehearsal. Pat Fitzgerald continued this tradition after Walker's death and encouraged other football team/band traditions. After every game, the team comes over to the band/student section for a celebratory singing of "Go U". One time, the star quarterback even came back out of the locker room after a home game victory to direct the school's fight song.
During those 3 years in the band, I always felt the love and appreciation from the football team. I'm just glad the rest of the school gets to see it now too.
So today, I am certainly feeling the love...even though I am very far from Evanston. Go 'Cats!
