I did a book exchange with a few of my friends to have some new books for summer reading. Because my friends and I are all such science geeks, one of the books I ended up with is a book entitled "Stiff: The Secret Life of Human Cadavers" by Mary Roach. Obviously, this is the book I am going to read first. It describes all the different ways that we use cadavers, from the obvious medical school gross anatomy dissections (which I am familiar with) to the not so obvious crash test dummy to study injuries caused by car crashes. Honestly, it is quite an interesting read. It has a little bit of an "ick" factor, but the way that the author mixes humor and respect for the dead is really amusing. Anyway, I wanted to share one of my favorite paragraphs in the book, which is actually the first one.
"The way I see it, being dead is not terribly far off from being on a cruise ship. Most of your time is spent lying on your back. The brain has shut down. The flesh begins to soften. Nothing much new happens, and nothing is expected of you." -Mary Roach
HA! Thoughts?
Sign me up for being a "stiff" on the cruise ship!
