Why the sudden realization, you ask? Because for most of this week, my legs were KILLING ME. That muscle class from Monday made my quads so sore that I could hardly move for 2 days. I seriously could barely walk, which meant that stairs were nearly impossible. I wanted to cry every time I was confronted with a staircase, and that felt like every 5 minutes. Take Tuesday for example...
leave apartment = down 2 flights of stairs
get to seat in front of lecture hall with stadium seating= down 1 flight of stairs
leave lecture hall = up 1 flight of stairs
go to sim clinic = up 1 flight of stairs
leave sim clinic = down 1 flight of stairs
arrive home for lunch = up 2 flights of stairs
leave apartment for afternoon lecture = down 2 flights of stairs
arrive at lecture hall seat = down 1 flight of stairs
leave lecture hall to finish project in sim clinic = up 1 flight of stairs
leave sim clinic = down 1 flight of stairs
arrive home = up 2 flights of stairs
receive email about package waiting in clubhouse to be picked up
consider leaving package in clubhouse until pain in legs subsides
decide that getting the new textbook inside the package is probably pretty important
curse the fact that getting to the clubhouse involves more stairs
leave apartment = down 2 flights of stairs
walk to clubhouse, get package, walk home
arrive home = up 2 flights of stairs
For those of you wanting the cliff's notes version, that was a total of 19 flights of stairs in a single day. That is not an unusual amount. I just never noticed how many there were before. I guess it makes me thankful that it has never really been an issue before. I'm glad that my body can tackle that many stairs every day without me even noticing. But man oh man did I dread those stairs for about 2 days. Now (3 days later), the legs are still pretty sore, but I can move around better and don't feel like I will collapse every time I take a step. Which is good, because there are a lot of them in Arizona.
