1. I was asked to babysit. BABYSIT. I can't recall the last time I babysat, because I'm pretty sure it has never happened before. My friend Brynn tracked me down last Wednesday afternoon to ask if I would babysit her son Friday night so that she could go to the movies with her husband. When she asked if I would do it, I laughed and told her that she must be absolutely desperate. She giggled and with a sigh of relief said, "I've asked everybody!" I agreed to do it, and I admit I had a good time. Her son is 3 and absolutely the cutest thing ever. We played with his toys in the bath, took the dog for a walk, watched "Monsters, Inc." on TV, blew bubbles, ran circles around the kitchen, and snacked on chocolate milk and Cheerios. I was fun to have someone around who wanted nothing more than your undivided attention. To make someone so happy by doing something as simple as tickling a foot or pouring a glass of milk felt really good. It was so simple to evoke a smile or a giggle. I left feeling cheered, but completely exhausted. He certainly wore me out!
2. A received a message from one of my patients requesting to use my name in a short story he has written. This patient is a published author and loves to write short stories in his free time. His latest story was inspired by me and my partner Tom. He just emailed me a copy and it is pretty hilarious. In short, Tom and I (through the help of a government agent and some time travel) save King Arthur's tooth. The best part is that the relationship between the characters in the story is a pretty accurate depiction of how Tom and I are in real life. I never thought much about how our patients might pick up on that. I got a really good chuckle out of it. I'm going to ask to see if I can post the link to the story here, because I feel like you readers might enjoy it too. I'll keep you posted.
That is pretty much the end of the strange requests from this past week. I'm glad it was just two, because I'm not sure how many more I would care to handle. In other news, I put new tires on my car this weekend. Thanks to those that made financial donations to that cause. My car drives much more quietly now. I also tried yoga for the first time, yesterday morning. It was enjoyable, I think. I'm still not sure if I want to make it a regular part of my exercise routine, but I would be open to trying it a few more times. Tonight, I rode my bike over to the local pool and did the lap swim. It felt SO good to get back in the pool. I can't believe how much I missed just swimming laps. I guess my old high school swim coach, Mr. Arnold, was right when he said that swimming was a "lifetime sport". Here I am, 10 years out of high school (which was the last time I was swimming competitively and on a regular basis) enjoying being in the pool much in the same way I did as a teenager. It put me in such a good mood. And, I'd like to point out (for those of you freezing your keisters off in Illinois) that this was an outdoor pool and I went at night and it was still overwhelmingly hot. We have had record breaking heat the past few days (105 yesterday, 103 today) and I am dying. I am not ready for months of oppressive heat just yet. And because I'm so nice, I'll donate 20 degrees to you all. (But I'm keeping the sunshine all to myself.)
